Hundreds of people, under the banner of the Shivamogga district unit of Madara Mahasabha, on Monday, staged a protest march in the city, demanding that the State government implement internal reservation among the Scheduled Castes during the recruitment process for 56,342 positions.

The protesters gathered near the Shivamogga City Corporation office and marched to the Deputy Commissioner’s office via Ameer Ahmed Circle and Seenappa Shetty Circle. During the march, they raised slogans calling for the implementation of the Justice Nagamohan Das commission’s recommendations regarding internal reservations. The movement of vehicles was disrupted on many roads in the heart of the city due to the protest march.

The police stopped the protesters as they attempted to get inside the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Later, the protesters staged a dharna on the office premises. Representatives of the Mahasabha, addressing the gathering, said that the organisation had been fighting for internal reservation for over four decades. The Supreme Court had allowed the states to implement the internal reservation.

The government should implement the recommendations of the Justice Nagamohandas Commission without delay. If the State cabinet, scheduled to meet on March 27 to discuss the issue, failed to take a favourable decision, the Madara Mahasabha and other pro-Dalit organizations would launch protests across the State against the government.

Mahasabha district president H. Shivaji, vice president Ramesh and others led the protest.
