The current LPG shortage has reportedly led to a change in breakfast menu at the 10 Amma Unavagams in Coimbatore city, including the withdrawal or reduction of idlis at several locations. While the outlets in Ramanathapuram, Saravanampatti and Town Hall areas have discontinued idlis, some others have reduced the number of the breakfast staple, according to sources. Canteen workers said preparing idli required more time and fuel compared to other items. “Around 1,000 idlis are prepared every morning. If the process begins at 5.30 a.m., it continues till about 9.30 a.m., taking nearly four hours. In contrast, pongal can be prepared within 30 to 45 minutes, which helps save fuel. Due to the current LPG constraints, we have stopped making idli,” said a canteen worker on the condition of anonymity.
