A road accident early on Monday claimed the life of a 30-year-old truck driver after his vehicle carrying over 700 cases of beer bottles overturned on the highway in Kozhikode city.

The lorry hit a car around 4 a.m. near the Iringadanpalli junction.

Hundreds of beer bottles were found scattered around the accident spot. Police sources said the vehicle was on its way from Karnataka to a Bevco outlet in Ernakulam. The reckless driving of the car driver was reportedly the reason for the accident, they said. A case has been registered against the car driver.

The deceased lorry driver was identified as Akhil Krishnan, a native of Pulpally in Wayanad district. Rescue personnel worked for nearly an hour to rescue Akhil from the wreckage before he was taken to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead.

Police officers from various city stations were deployed at the accident site to prevent the theft of the scattered liquor bottles. Officers from the Excise department also reached the spot to check the situation.
