The sudden development left residents of the taluk in panic mode forcing them to take shelter wherever possible. Such was the effect of the hailstorm that it seemed like farmland, roads, open spaces and rooftops were covered in snow. In a few places, the size of hailstones created panic forcing people to run for cover and take shelter. Several vehicles were stranded on the road as hailstones covered kilometres of road stretches making it risky for them to drive. It was only after the intensity came down and the hailstones melted that the motorists drove off carefully. Although rain with hail stones was witnessed in various parts of Dharwad district, it was not of such intensity as was witnessed in Kalghatgi.
