A two-year-old female leopard was found dead with gunshot injuries on the fringe of a forest in Hunsur divisionm in Karnataka, on April 7. Forest Minister Eshwar B. Khandre has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the killing.

The body of the wild animal was found in the Koppa area under the Periyapatna range, about 2 km from the Gulledehalla State Forest.

Officials said the killing has raised serious concerns over continued illegal hunting activities in the region.

In a written directive to the Chief Wildlife Warden, Mr. Khandre termed the incident ‘deeply disturbing’, and said it strengthens fears that poaching for wildlife body parts continues despite enforcement measures. He directed authorities to conduct a thorough probe and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that three bullets were lodged in the animal’s body, establishing that the leopard was killed by gunfire. Following this development, the Minister directed officials to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend the poachers and initiate stringent legal action.

The Minister warned that any lapse in patrolling would invite disciplinary action against the forest personnel concerned. Also, Mr Khandre called for strengthening the Forest Crime Control Cell.
