The Budget Session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature began on a stormy note on Wednesday.

Soon after Governor S. Abdul Nazeer began his address, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) members staged protest alleging that his speech contained “inaccuracies, misleading assertions and falsehoods.”

They raised objection, accusing the NDA government of deliberately making the Governor deliver an “untrue and scripted speech.” They also condemned the “authoritarian governance, and attacks on and intimidation of opposition party leaders and their families.”

Ahead of the session, YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, along with the party MLAs and MLCs, staged a protest outside the Legislative Assembly premises.

Holding placards, they demanded that the YSRCP be granted the status of the principal opposition party in the House. They raised slogans against the government, accusing it of taking anti-people decisions and deliberately denying them Opposition status to silence their voice.

The YSRCP leaders asserted that as representatives of the people, they had the right to question the government on public issues. Denying them official recognition as the principal Opposition was an attempt to suppress democratic dissent, they alleged, adding that the party would continue its struggle on behalf of the people.

Inside the House, the YSRCP members alleged that the Governor’s address failed to reflect the ground realities. They alleged that law and order deteriorated in the State and that the Governor ignored key public concerns.

Raising slogans, they questioned why issues such as alleged misinformation campaign on the Tirumala laddu controversy, protection of members’ rights, and privatisation of medical colleges were not addressed.

They also questioned the State’s borrowing of ₹3.2 lakh crore and sought clarity on how the funds were utilised. They alleged that the Governor was reading from a script prepared by the ruling coalition without verifying the facts.

Criticising the government’s performance, the YSRCP leaders alleged that there was no visible progress in welfare or development. They claimed that women’s empowerment had weakened, farmers were not receiving remunerative prices, and students were suffering due to delays in fee reimbursement.

They further alleged that government employees were facing undue pressure and that pending dues had not been cleared. Volunteers and unemployed youth, they said, were misled with unfulfilled promises of allowances and jobs.

Stating that Andhra Pradesh ranked low in governance standards, the YSRCP members questioned why these issues were not included in the Governor’s speech. They later staged a walkout in protest.
