The Kozhikode City police have launched ‘Nirbhaya Nisha’, a project aimed at improving the safety of women travelling at night, as part of the observance of International Women’s Day. The initiative, launched on Sunday (March 8, 2026), seeks to provide prompt police assistance and strengthen security arrangements for women commuting during late hours.

The State-level project in Kozhikode was inaugurated by writer K.P. Sudheera at a function organised at Kozhikode Beach. O. Sadasivan, Mayor; G. Jaidev, District Police Chief (Kozhikode City); S. Shamsudheen, Additional Superintendent of Police; and K.J. Johnson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Anti-Narcotics Cell), were present.

Designed as part of a State-wide security initiative of the Kerala Police, the project aims to improve safety for women who travel at night for work, education, medical emergencies or other purposes. The scheme envisages a rapid response mechanism to address emergencies faced by women between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. through coordinated policing and the use of the latest technology.

According to senior police officers, the system will function through the integrated use of several emergency response platforms, including the Emergency Response Support System, the 112 national emergency helpline, district police control rooms, highway patrol squads, and Pink Patrol vehicles. The SOS facility available on the police mobile application will also be linked to the response network to facilitate quicker assistance.

Along with the project launch, the police will intensify night patrols, strengthen monitoring through control rooms and identify vulnerable locations requiring additional surveillance. Outreach programmes will also be conducted to help women familiarise themselves with the new facilities and their prompt use during emergency situations, they said.
