With incidents of residents from the city becoming victims of conventional or new-age cyber frauds, the Coimbatore City Police are in the efforts to develop a network of volunteers, who will create awareness among the public.

City Police Commissioner N. Kannan said the plan is to develop a network namely ‘Kovai Cyber Warriors’, which will have volunteers ranging from students to professionals.

According to the city police, residents from Coimbatore lost a total of ₹87.16 crore in various modes of cybercrimes in 2025. The police arrested 60 people involved in these crimes and provisions of the Goondas Act were invoked against eight of them. The cybercrime station had received a total of 9,960 complaints, of which 7,779 involved fraudulent financial transactions.

According to Mr. Kannan, sensitising the public on new cybercrimes and modus operandi followed by cyber fraudsters, especially senior citizens, could prevent crimes taking place on the cyberspace to an extent. Volunteers working under ‘Kovai Cyber Warriors’ will be trained to do these activities.

Besides educating the public on new trends in cybercrimes, the volunteers will also assist people in approaching the police and during investigations, said Mr. Kannan.

The cybercrime station in Coimbatore city had registered a total of 289 cases in 2025.
