A Knowledge Leadership Forum (KLF) Lecture on UNESCO World Heritage was organised at SASTRA, Thanjavur, by the School of Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Education on February 10. According to a release, Manabu Koiso, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and former Professor, Kansai University of International Studies, Kobe, Japan, delivered a lecture at IAB SASHE Auditorium on ‘The Way to Sustain the ‘Living’ World Heritage – Case of the Great Living Chola Temples.’ They explained UNESCO’s concept of ‘Living Heritage’ as cultural traditions passed down through generations while remaining dynamic, citing the Great Living Chola Temples as a significant example. Mr. Koiso traced the history of Dravidian culture and the Chola temples, highlighting the continued respect shown by successive rulers. He also spoke on the role of Geographical Indication in protecting local artisans, referring to GI-tagged crafts around Thanjavur, and highlighted the excellence seen in Swamimalai bronze icons. He concluded his lecture by emphasising the role of the younger generation in sustaining traditional art forms.
