Saranya J.S., climate researcher. Saranya J.S., a native of Tanur in Malappuram, has been selected for the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA) instituted and funded by the European Commission. The highly competitive two-year fellowship will support her project titled “Indian Ocean Warming Pattern, Surface and Subsurface Marine Heatwaves: Storylines and Mechanisms (IO-WAVE)”, to be carried out in France. Ms. Saranya’s research will examine how Indian Ocean warming patterns and major climate modes influence surface and subsurface marine heatwaves. The project will combine climate model evaluation and high-resolution simulations to develop future storylines of marine heatwave risks. The fellowship will be hosted at IRD/LOCEAN-IPSL, France, with a secondment at Mercator Ocean International. Ms. Saranya completed her PhD from Seoul National University (SNU), South Korea, in 2025 under the supervision of Prof. SungHyun Nam. She earlier carried out her Master’s research at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) under the guidance of Roxy Mathew Koll, with co-supervision from Nameer P.O., and completed her integrated B.Sc-M.Sc in Climate Change Adaptation from the College of Climate Change and Environmental Science, Vellanikkara, Kerala Agricultural University. She is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Ocean Observation Laboratory, Seoul National University. She is the daughter of Sasikumar M.K. and Jayanthi K.V., and is married to Dr. Panini Dasgupta.
