Kannur Corporation Mayor P. Indira was reportedly injured during a scuffle amid a siege organised by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in front of the Corporation office on Tuesday. She was later admitted to the Kannur District Hospital.

The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. when the Mayor attempted to enter the Corporation office while LDF activists were staging a blockade. The demonstration allegedly obstructed the Mayor and the councillors from entering the premises, leading to a push-and-shove situation in which the Mayor reportedly sustained injuries.

Despite the incident, a council meeting chaired by the Mayor was initially held at the Corporation office. However, after reportedly experiencing fatigue, she was shifted to the district hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, Congress leaders and workers staged a sit-in protest on the road, condemning the obstruction of the Mayor.

LDF response

Responding to the allegations, LDF Kannur Assembly constituency convener N. Chandran said the Mayor was not assaulted. According to him, she was injured after accidentally hitting against a metal barricade while attempting to enter the office.

The LDF had organised the siege alleging that the civic body was obstructing development works initiated through the MLA funds of Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran.
