Mar Andrews Thazhath,Archbishop of the Thrissur Archdiocese, has criticised the State government’s liquor policy and termed it harmful to the social environment as it allegedly increases the availability and consumption of alcohol in the State. He was speaking while presiding over a meeting of the Archdiocesan Jagratha Samithi in Thrissur on Thursday. He said the change in the stance of the political and administrative leadership, which had earlier promised in its manifesto to take phased and stringent steps to reduce alcohol consumption and accessibility, was surprising. The government’s decision to extend bar operating hours would adversely affect the peace and harmony of families, he noted, urging the authorities to reconsider and roll back the move.
