Sandeep, the only accused in Dr Vandana Das murder case, guilty and the quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Thursday. Prosecution had produced more than 70 witnesses including police officers, forensic experts, treating physicians, and colleagues during the trial. Additionally, 22 pieces of evidence (material objects) and 207 documents were presented before the court. Vandana’s murder was the first instance in the State where a doctor was killed at a hospital while on duty. Sandeep, a native of Kudavattoor and a teacher at an aided school in Nedumpana, had stabbed Dr. Vandana to death. He was brought to the hospital by police as he was injured in a brawl. Reportedly, he was under deaddiction treatment and he attacked the staff with a surgical scissors he grabbed from the hospital while they were dressing his wound. Deep wounds to the chest and head were the cause of death. The incident took place at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital at 4.35 am on May 10, 2023. Vandana was the only daughter of K.G. Mohandas and Vasanthakumari, residing at Nampichirakalayil House in Kuttichira, Kaduthuruthy, Kottayam. After completing her MBBS from Azeezia Medical College, Meeyannoor, she had joined the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital as house surgeon.
