Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will open the first phase of the Meppadi township for the survivors of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides on Elstone estate in Kalpetta in Wayanad on Sunday (March 1, 2026).

Revenue Minister K. Rajan, in a statement on Saturday, said 178 houses would be handed over to the survivors. Each house, built on a seven‑cent plot, has a built‑up area of 1,000 sq. ft and a foundation strong enough to support an additional storey. The design includes three bedrooms, a hall, dining area, study room, kitchen, store room and sit‑out, with the allocation of houses done through a draw of lots.

Meppadi is being developed as a near‑self‑contained residential town for over 1,662 people across 410 houses once the project is completed. The plan includes modern roads, electricity, drinking‑water supply, a health centre with a laboratory, pharmacy and vaccination unit, an anganwadi, community centre, public market, children’s park, library and an open‑air theatre. The Meppadi township stands as a statement of continuity, Mr. Rajan said.
