Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday (March 22, 2026) criticised what he termed as the Centre’s reluctance to take a firm stand against the U.S., warning that the conflict was deepening global instability and affecting livelihoods in the country.

Speaking after inaugurating the statue of C. Kannan, a prominent CPI(M) and trade union leader, in Kannur, he said millions across the world were living in anxiety due to the prevailing war situation. He alleged that the aggressive policies of the U.S. and its allies were contributing significantly to global unrest and said India should have adopted a strong anti-imperialist position.

He said the impact of the conflict was already being felt in the country, with costs rising in sectors such as hospitality and everyday household expenses. He also pointed to concerns among expatriates in Gulf countries, including Keralites, over potential job losses due to economic uncertainties.

Criticising India’s foreign policy approach, he said the country, despite being a sovereign nation, was not prepared to openly condemn the U.S., adding that the situation had reached a point where India was required to seek permission from the U.S. to buy oil from Russia.

Recalling Kannan’s role, the Chief Minister said he had worked closely with beedi labourers and led efforts to safeguard workers’ rights. “Even after 20 years, he continues to live in the hearts of workers. His courage, clarity and decisive interventions made his word authoritative in labour matters,” he said.

He expressed concern over the increasing challenges faced by workers, including job insecurity and attempts to dilute hard-won labour rights such as minimum wages, and said these gains should not be rolled back.

Criticising policies perceived as favouring corporate interests, he said trade unions would intensify efforts to protect workers, while also flagging broader concerns such as rising poverty and inadequate welfare measures.

Beedi workers contributed ₹30 lakh for the construction of the statue. The sculpture was created by Unni Kannayi. CPI(M) leaders, including M.V. Govindan, P.K. Sreemathy, K.P. Sahadevan, K.K. Ragesh and Minister Ramachandran Kadanapally, were present.
