While LDF leadership in Kollam expresses absolute confidence in securing a third consecutive term, UDF and NDA argue that widespread allegations of corruption, a deepening financial crisis, and anti-people policies have created a wave of anti-incumbency that will inevitably lead to a change in government. Speaking at the ‘Vottum Vakkum’ debate organised by Kollam Press Club on Wedenesday, CPI(M) district secretary S. Sudevan asserted that the LDF rule was characterized by financial stability and communal harmony. He highlighted the timely distribution of welfare pensions, the realisation of National Highway expansion, and successful post-flood reconstruction as the pillars of their public support. “The swift arrest of culprits in criminal cases and a riot-free environment have strengthened the people’s trust,” Mr. Sudevan remarked. Echoing this sentiment, CPI district assistant secretary Sam K. Daniel claimed that the LDF will repeat its 2016 success. He pointed to the Life Mission housing project, extensive title deed distribution, and the resolution of the Arippa land struggle as transformative milestones achieved without allowing communal forces to interfere in governance. Launching a scathing counter-attack, DCC president P. Rajendraprasad said that the UDF is contesting to unseat a government that has pushed Kerala into a staggering debt of ₹6 lakh crore. He alleged massive corruption even during the COVID-19 pandemic and accused the administration of squandering public funds on PR work and advertisements. “The government spent ₹11.7 lakh on a single event featuring actor Mohanlal while brutally suppressing the protests of ASHA workers,” he alleged. He further accused the LDF for opening over a thousand bars and claimed the health sector has completely collapsed. He predicted a landslide victory for the UDF with over 100 seats. BJP district president P. Prashanth centered his arguments on the State’s economic bankruptcy and the controversy surrounding backdoor appointments. He was quick to credit the Central government for the National Highway development and accused the LDF of using State machinery to dismantle traditions at Sabarimala. “CPI(M) leaders who stole gold from Sabarimala ended up in jail. The alternating rule of these two fronts is a danger to the State,” Mr. Prashanth stated. Adding to the opposition’s volley, Muslim League district general secretary Sulfikar Salam expressed concern over Kerala becoming an ‘aged State’ due to youth migration. He accused the Left of operating like a corporate entity and slammed the government for its total failure in curbing the rampant spread of narcotics across the State.
