‘Fact-checking’ digital campaigns seem to be the talk of the town this Kerala Assembly polls. Videos and other content that are counter-checking the claims of candidates have taken over the digital space, with many turning into a treasure trove of accidental comedy. A particular Facebook campaign, a colloquial epithet of a politician, is onto its fifth version after four other earlier pages were taken down by Meta. The page appears to be a satire/parody profile and has garnered over 21,000 followers within six to seven hours of its launch. Those behind the page say they are not associated with any party. “We are an independent page. We noticed this particular politician consistently making false claims. We started this page to fact-check those statements,” they say. “After we began fact-checking, the politician and his allies started reporting our page. Due to mass reporting, the page was taken down. However, we are not willing to step back,” they add. The admins emphasise that though they are not affiliated with any party, they have a clear political stance. It is worth noting that a number of Left social media handles are seen following the page. Websites too are trending. A website of the same campaign has had over 15,000 visitors now. Satire videos with AI news anchors and old news clips are seen countering the claims of a politician about the ruling front. With the poll campaign finale approaching, the social media push of political parties have reached a peak with colourful claims and counter-claims. Though serious in nature, many have the public in stitches.
