The Congress’ allegations of a “deal” between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are part of attempts to divert attention from the LDF government’s decade-long developmental achievements, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary M.A. Baby has said. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Baby said that the situation on the ground is currently favourable for the LDF. “The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had even recently spoken of the communists as one of the biggest enemies of the Sangh. In the past, RSS ideologues such as Golwalkar had cast the communists along with Muslims and Christians as the country’s enemies. The Congress which claims a deal between the LDF and the BJP is ruling the Mattathur panchayat with the BJP. It is also ruling another panchayat in Ernakulam with Twenty20, another NDA ally,” said Mr. Baby. ‘Natural allies’ He said that the Congress and the BJP were natural allies as they represented the interests of the exploitative class and implemented extreme capitalist exploitative policies when they came to power. “Nothing much separates the BJP and the Congress in economic policies. Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders claim that they are the ‘real left’. To be left means to fight against the existing exploitative economic structures to bring about fundamental change. On the other hand, the right makes minimal reforms while protecting the interests of the exploitative class which they represent. Even in the case of the recent nationwide strike against the labour codes, only the LDF government in Kerala declared that it will not implement the codes, while all the Congress-led State governments are implementing it,” said Mr. Baby. In Kasaragod Responding to a question, he said that the LDF does not have any electoral understanding with the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). “The CPI(M) never asked for support unlike the UDF which requested the SDPI to withdraw its candidate in a constituency in Kasaragod. In another constituency, the SDPI said that it will cast its vote in such a way as to defeat the RSS’s candidate, although the CPI(M) did not seek support,” he said.
