The new deadline has been set for March 31, 2026. Earlier, operators were required to comply with these regulations by February 28, 2026. The department had issued strict instructions to bus owners and body builders across the state to adhere to prescribed safety norms for sleeper coaches, acting on directives from the National Human Rights Commission and recommendations by the Central Institute of Road Transport. In an official statement released on Wednesday (March 18, 2026), the Department confirmed that additional time has been granted to ensure full compliance with the rules. Operators have been directed to follow NHRC road safety guidelines, which outline eight compulsory safety measures. They must also submit comprehensive compliance reports detailing vehicle registration numbers, category, registering authority, investigating officer information, and relevant case references. Among the mandated measures are the removal of driver cabin partition doors and sliding fittings on sleeper berths, installation of a minimum 10-kg fire extinguisher in the designated green zone, provision of emergency exits and safety hammers, and fitting of Fire Detection and Suppression Systems (FDSS). Additionally, buses constructed using chassis extensions have been ordered to be taken off the roads immediately.
