Thimmapur informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that the government is considering revising the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965, and introducing a new law to curb the illegal sale of liquor. The Minister also said the government is examining the possibility of bringing illegal liquor sales under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. In grocery stores Replying to a question by Basanagouda Daddal (Congress), Mr. Thimmapur acknowledged that liquor is being sold illegally in grocery stores in Raichur district for personal gain. He noted that action had not been adequately taken under the existing provisions of the Excise Act and stressed the need for stricter enforcement. He suggested forming special squads in Raichur and Yadgir districts to crack down on illegal liquor sales. On highways The Minister stated that the Excise Department has been conducting continuous patrols to curb irregularities. Regular inspections are being carried out on national and State highways. At the district level, standing committee meetings are being held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, and necessary measures are being taken to control violations. Mr. Thimmapur added that cases have been registered against those involved in the illegal manufacture and sale of liquor.
