Karnataka Budget 2026: IVF centres planned in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi

New in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) centres will be established in two government institutions as part of a broader push to strengthen medical education and tertiary healthcare infrastructure in Karnataka.

Presenting the 2026–27 Budget, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said ₹1 crore has been allocated for each of the IVF facilities — one in Bengaluru and another in Kalaburagi. The move is expected to expand access to assisted reproductive services in government institutions.

Another ₹10 crore has been set aside for construction of a boys’ hostel for MBBS and BDS students of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI).

The Karnataka government has announced that Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru will be renamed after socialist leader Shantaveri Gopalagowda.

Construction of hospitals

For the 2026–27 financial year, ₹620 crore has been allocated for construction of medical colleges, hospitals and super-speciality hospitals across Karnataka. An additional ₹220 crore has been earmarked for the procurement of medical equipment.

The existing 400-bed Jayadeva Cardiovascular Hospital in Mysuru will be upgraded to a 600-bed facility at an estimated cost of ₹180 crore.

Steps are being taken to operationalise previously announced institutions. A 300-bed hospital at Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district, sanctioned in last year’s budget, is being taken forward, while action has been initiated to establish a constituent college of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bagalkot.

The State plans to set up new super-speciality hospitals at Karwar and Yadgir, each at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore.

Cancer care

To strengthen cancer care services in north Karnataka, the government has proposed to establish a cancer hospital at Munirabad–T.B. Dam to provide tertiary-level cancer treatment to patients from Vijayanagara and Koppal districts.

Another initiative involves the establishment of a regional centre of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research within the BBMP Multi-Speciality Hospital at Govindarajanagar in Bengaluru. The project will be taken up in collaboration with the Greater Bengaluru Authority at a cost of ₹15 crore.

Completed projects

Several infrastructure projects under the Medical Education Department have been completed. These include a 450-bed multi-speciality hospital in Karwar built at a cost of ₹198 crore, a trauma care centre at Raichur costing ₹10 crore, and peripheral cancer centres in Mysuru and Tumakuru developed at a cost of ₹92 crore.

The Jayadeva Cardiovascular Regional Centre in Hubballi, constructed at a cost of ₹236 crore, is scheduled to be inaugurated during the current year.

The State has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Azim Premji Foundation for construction of a 1,000-bed charitable super-speciality tertiary care and organ transplant hospital on the premises of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases in Bengaluru.
