Kannur Corporation marked the New Year with cake cutting and celebrations ahead of its first council meeting of the year, with Mayor P. Indira calling for a fresh beginning and urging councillors to work together on development, irrespective of political differences. The inaugural meeting witnessed lively discussions on multiple civic issues. The Mayor said the Corporation-owned, dilapidated quarters building at South Bazar and the surrounding land would be protected by constructing a compound wall, adding that all related matters would be finalised after discussion with representatives of all political parties. Deputy Mayor K.P. Thahir, who took part in the debate, stressed the need to make the identified area at South Bazar garbage-free and secure it with a compound wall. Opposition councillor V.K. Prakashini demanded that office facilities be provided to councillors at the Corporation’s expense. She also called for imposing maximum penalties on those who dump waste illegally and for installing more CCTV cameras to identify offenders. Councillor Rijil Mamkutty pointed out that indiscriminate waste dumping had aggravated the menace of stray dogs, while councillor Umesh Kaniyankadi urged the immediate launch of pre-monsoon cleaning works. Responding to the discussions, the Mayor said an appropriate decision would be taken on providing office facilities for councillors and that a meeting of officials would be convened at the earliest to address pre-monsoon sanitation measures. Councillors K. Seetha, Pratheesh, Mithra and others also participated in the discussions.
