In a significant milestone in its journey, Kanniyakumari Government Medical College and Hospital (KKGMCH) secured first position in three categories, including overall performance of the hospital in south zone, as assessed by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) last year.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian had announced that government medical colleges and hospitals would be assessed and certificates would be awarded in appreciation of their performances. Based on that, the assessment was carried out at KKGMCH by doctors from various institutions, including Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital and others, as directed by the DMER.

The facilities were segregated into different zones, and government medical college and hospitals in Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakuamari were grouped under the south zone.

The awards were categorised under overall performance of the hospital, paediatrics, general surgery , obstetrics and gynaecology, and general medicine.

For each category, the doctors of the concerned department conducted inspections. The assessment covered hospital infrastructure including campus and hospital tidiness, building maintenance, bio medical waste disposal process, awareness of bio medical waste management among staff and sanitation workers, safety measures, lighting, patient feedback and other parameters.

Of the five categories, KKGMCH secured first position in overall performance of the hospital, paediatrics and general surgery departments. In obstetrics and gynaecology and general medicine departments the facility bagged second position, thereby securing ranks in all the five categories.

The awards were presented by Mr. Subramanian at the diamond jubilee celebration of DMER held at Chennai last week.

Speaking on this, hospital Dean David told The Hindu that continuous monitoring and training played a pivotal role in achieving ranks among the government medical colleges and hospitals in the south zone.

“Both the staff and sanitation workers were given periodic training, based on National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) standards, and were continuously updated with recent developments,” he noted.

He further stressed that the training and monitoring would be strengthened further to maintain the hospital’s standard.
