Industries Minister P. Rajeeve and Local Self-Government Minister M.B. Rajesh have directed the local body authorities to complete bio-mining at the Kalamassery municipal dumping yard in a time-bound manner.

The Ministers issued the instructions after reviewing the progress of the project. Municipal chairman Jamal Manakkadan briefed the Ministers about the current status of the project.

State-of-the-art machinery is being used to scientifically process and remove legacy waste. Of the total estimated 44,742 cubic metres of legacy waste at the site, 28,512 cubic metres have already been cleared, according to a communication.

Once the waste is completely removed and the land levelled, the prime real estate, valued at over ₹50 crore, will be available for various projects of the civic body, a statement issued by the municipality said.  The project is being implemented under the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP), with financial and technical assistance from the World Bank.

The total outlay for the project is ₹9.20 crore.
