A 16-year-old juvenile working in a private gold jewellery melting workshop at Mayiladuthurai who allegedly stole a gold ingot weighing 1.5 kilograms was apprehended within three hours by a special police team on Monday night. 

The stolen gold ingot was recovered by the police team from the juvenile who was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board at Mayiladuthurai and sent to the Government Observation Home in Thanjavur.  The value of the gold ingot was put at ₹2 crore.

The minor boy, a native of Maharashtra, had been working only from January 5 in the gold melting workshop run by P. Sukesh (48) in Mayiladuthurai town, Superintendent of Police, Mayiladuthurai G. Stalin said.  Sukesh had handed over the gold ingot to the juvenile asking the latter to clean it. However, the boy escaped with the gold ingot from the workshop prompting Sukesh to inform the Mayiladuthurai police.

Acting on information, the Mayiladuthurai SP Stalin inspected the spot and conducted inquiries. He constituted two special teams to crack the case, apprehend the juvenile and recover the stolen property.  An alert was sounded to all check posts in the district and information was flashed to the police personnel of neighbouring districts. The special teams conducted checks at various places in Mayiladuthurai town. 

Acting on a secret information, one of the teams apprehended the juvenile near the Mayiladuthurai railway junction and recovered the stolen gold ingot within three hours. The juvenile voluntarily confessed to have committed the crime. A case under section 306 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Mayiladuthurai station has been registered, SP Stalin said.
