He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the 37th National Road Safety Awareness Drive conducted by the Regional Transport Department, District Legal Services Authority, district administration and the Home Department jointly in Yadgir on Thursday. Mr. Mariyappa said that a majority of road accidents are caused by rash and negligent driving. “Exceeding speed limits, using cell phones while driving and riding motorcycles without helmets cause accidents and put an end to valuable lives. Every rider should follow the safety guidelines and motor vehicle rules for his own safety and that of others. Violators of the law have to face legal consequences, including fines,” he said. He said that while around 12,000 people die in road accidents in the State every year, there are countless others who lose their limbs and various body parts. “Whenever you are on the road, you must remember that your dependents are waiting at home for your safe return,” he added. “The drive has been launched to create awareness on how and why to follow traffic rules. In many such incidents, minors are found riding vehicles. But it shouldn’t happen,” he said. Regional Transport Officer Milind Kumar said that the general public should join hands with the department to create awareness through similar drives to save valuable lives. District-level officers of various departments and others were present.
