Senior civil judge and District Legal Services Authority member-secretary Mariyappa said that women should be aware of all their rights and live as self-reliant individuals.

He was speaking at the inauguration of a one-day training programme held on Friday (March 13) to prevent women and child trafficking. It was organised by members of the Nari Adalat Nyaya Sakhi Committee, the district administration, zilla panchayat, District Legal Services Authority, and the Women and Child Development Department under the Mission Shakti Scheme in Yadgir.

Mr. Mariyappa lamented that even in a patriarchal society, women still have laws, but they are subjected to various forms of exploitation owing to a lack of awareness about them.

The training is being provided through Nari Sakhi Nyaya Adalats to make every woman in the district aware of the law and rights. The selected Nari Sakhis should work in rural areas to empower women, he suggested.

Presiding over the programme, Tippanna Shirasagi, deputy director of the Women and Child Development Department, said that the Union government has implemented this important scheme in ambitious districts, adding that the sakhis will be elected from five gram panchayats in the district to create awareness among women and attend to their problems.

District Health Officer Mahesh Biradar, AYUSH officer Vandana Gali, Deputy Director of Public Instruction Channabasappa Mudhol and others were present.
