The owner of a goldsmith unit in Sowcarpet, where a gas cylinder exploded on Wednesday, succumbed to burns in the early hours of Thursday, while six others were admitted to the burns ward at the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. The jewellery shop was located on the fourth floor of a building on Singannan Street. Work was under way to melt jewellery when a cylinder suddenly exploded, triggering a fire on Wednesday night. Seven people including Suman Paul, the owner of the shop,, and six employees sustained severe burns. They were rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, and later shifted to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
