With the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research unit in Mysuru witnessing a growing influx of patients, including those from neighbouring districts, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced a major expansion of the cardiac care facility.

Presenting the State Budget, the Chief Minister said the hospital on KRS Road will be upgraded from its existing 400-bed to a 600-bed capacity facility at a cost of ₹180 crore. The project is expected to significantly improve specialised cardiac care in the region.

The hospital is located on the PKTB campus of the Department of Medical Education on KRS Road, where several other public healthcare institutions are also situated.

The expansion comes in response to the rising patient load at the Mysuru unit, which has been drawing patients from across the region due to the demand for advanced yet affordable heart treatment.

Once completed, the Mysuru hospital is expected to become the second-largest Jayadeva facility in the State after the Bengaluru unit, benefiting heart patients from Mysuru and surrounding districts. Before the Mysuru branch was established, patients from the region largely depended on the Jayadeva hospital in Bengaluru for treatment.

Sources in the department said that land available behind the existing hospital building could be utilised for the expansion, enabling the addition of more beds and improved infrastructure.

“The expansion was much needed as patients from five districts are availing the hospital’s services. On average, more than 900 patients visit the outpatient department every day, while around 60 patients are admitted daily for various cardiac-related treatments. We require at least two more cath labs to effectively cater to the growing needs of patients. On behalf of the Jayadeva family, we extend our gratitude to the Chief Minister for announcing the expansion of the hospital into a 600-bed facility,” said K.S. Sadanand, medical superintendent and cardiologist, Sri Jayadeva Hospital, Mysuru.

Mysore Medical College and Research Institute director and dean K.R. Dakshayani said the expansion would greatly benefit patients in the region, as the facility has been witnessing a consistently high patient load.

The Jayadeva branch in Mysuru was initially established on the premises of Krishna Rajendra Hospital before being shifted to an independent campus on KRS Road after space constraints emerged due to increasing patient numbers.

In the Budget, Mr. Siddaramaiah also said that a peripheral cancer care centre being developed on the PKTB campus was nearing completion. The project is being built at a cost of ₹92 crore. Sources said that while the civil works are almost complete, the facility is awaiting the installation of medical equipment.

Meanwhile, more advanced public healthcare facilities are being planned for Mysuru. A mental health treatment centre on the lines of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences is also coming up on the outskirts of Mysuru in the Varuna constituency, represented by Mr. Siddaramaiah.
