JAC intensifies stir against move to set up ‘dump yard’ at Sirsapalli near Huzurabad

The ongoing agitation by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the State government’s reported move to set up a Waste to Energy (WTE) processing facility near Sirsapalli in Huzurabad mandal is gaining momentum with leaders of various political parties and organisations extending their support to the ‘anti-dump yard’ stir.

The aggrieved residents of Sirsapalli and its adjoining areas in Huzurabad mandal, mainly farmers, are up in arms against the move, raising grave concerns over what they called the imminent threat of air and groundwater pollution from the proposed WTE unit.

They have been organising peaceful protests in the form of relay fasts under the aegis of the JAC for the past few weeks. The JAC launched the apolitical agitation against the move ever since it was reported by persons at the helm that there were plans to relocate the dumping yard in Karimnagar to a place somewhere between Karimnagar and Warangal cities.

Sources added that the government had earlier mulled a plan to set up municipal solid waste-based WTE in Huzurabad mandal for Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation and Karimnagar Municipal Corporation in a public-private partnership model.

The plan was intended to develop an integrated waste management facility in a scientific manner in strict adherence to environmental norms, sources added.

Meanwhile, BRS MLA from Huzurabad P. Kaushik Reddy on Thursday visited Sirsapalli and expressed his solidarity with the members of the JAC spearheading the ‘anti-dumping yard’ stir. He called upon all sections of people to make ‘Huzurabad bandh’ on April 3 a success.

He announced that he will undertake a ‘deeksha’ on April 7 and 8 to mount pressure on the government to drop its ‘move’ to set up a ‘dumping yard’ on the outskirts of Sirsapalli.
