The Coimbatore Corporation’s ₹646.71-crore 24/7 drinking water supply project, covering all 60 wards under the pre-2011 city limits, continues to miss its deadlines, with completion now scheduled for February this year.

Of the 1.5 lakh planned household connections, 95,947 are now receiving continuous 24/7 water supply.

Initially slated for completion in August 2025, the project was first extended to January 2026 before encountering further delays. The slowdown was primarily due to pending main line connections at Trichy Road and Lanka Corner junctions. Of the 33 planned overhead tanks, 30 have been completed, while work on the remaining three is ongoing.

Pipeline connections have been laid in areas including Sungam Junction, Alvernia School, Olympus Bus Stand, and sections of 80 Feet Road. Officials said that the work at Lanka Corner was time-consuming, with concrete slabs requiring breaking for trenching and simultaneous installation of a precast stormwater box culvert.

Test supply from Bharathi Park tank will soon run through feeder mains passing Metupalayam Road, Lanka Corner, and Sungam Junction, filling overhead tanks before reaching households.

Currently, 19,000 new connections are receiving water. Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran has directed that the remaining 35,000 connections be completed by February and discussions with contractor SUEZ have been held to expedite the project.
