The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department has honoured 14 septuagenarian couples under a scheme announced by the department in its ‘Policy Note’ presented in the Legislative Assembly. According to official sources, the money drawn from Tiruvarur Thyagarajaswamy temple fund was used to purchase dhoti, sari, blouse piece, fruits, turmeric, ‘kumkum’, glass bangles, and other ‘lucky charms’ for distribution to the elderly couples. Fourteen pairs of senior citizens were selected by the department to be honoured under the scheme at the temple, and clothes and other gifts totalling ₹35,000 were distributed to them at the temple by department officials and DMK representatives on January 2. Collector V. Mohanachandran and Tiruvarur MLA Poondi Kalaivanan participated in the event.
