A model colony will be constructed with all amenities for the poor people in Velugumatla in Khammam city in such a way that people from other States in the country will come and visit it, said Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.

He said that the remaining 16 acres of land in Velugumatla, after distributing house sites to the poor, will be utilised for the construction of a Telangana Public School and other government educational institutions.

He was speaking after distributing house site pattas to the eligible beneficiaries among the displaced poor people on Bhoodan lands in Velugumatla along with Ministers Tummala Nageshwara Rao and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy at the Integrated District Offices Complex (IDOC) in Khammam on Wednesday.

The move comes close on the heels of the recent demolition of a little over 700 houses during an ‘eviction drive’ on Bhoodan lands at Velugumatla on February 24, 2026.

Of the total 412 eligible beneficiaries identified as part of the recent socio-economic survey in Velugumatla, house site pattas and Indiramma houses have been sanctioned to as many as 311 poor people on Bhoodan lands in Velugumatla. Indiramma houses have been sanctioned to the remaining 101 poor people in their respective villages.

Addressing the beneficiaries at a meeting held in IDOC, Mr. Vikramarka said that the government will not only construct Indiramma houses for the poor people on Bhoodan lands in Velugumatla, but also provide all basic amenities such as electricity, drinking water, roads, a hospital, a community hall, and a shopping complex.

The Deputy CM instructed the officials to ensure that the construction of the model colony be completed by December 9, 2026. We will invite Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for the housewarming ceremonies of poor people in Velugumatla on December 9, the birthday of Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi. he said.

He lashed out at the previous BRS rulers accusing them of miserably failing to construct a single house, leaving the homeless poor people in the lurch for almost a decade. Those who failed to deliver even a single house have no moral right to criticise the present Congress government, he said.

In a landmark initiative, the Congress government sanctioned ₹22,500 crore at one go for constructing 4.5 lakh Indiramma houses for the poor across the State, he asserted.

He said that some vested elements were deliberately resorting to mudslinging against the Congress government as they do not want the poor to benefit from such welfare initiatives.

He alleged that a mafia network had been collecting money from poor people and running a parallel system without providing basic facilities for the past several years. The government has now taken steps to ensure that the poor can live with dignity and self-respect.

Mr. Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy hit out at the previous BRS rulers accusing them of showing callous apathy towards the plight of poor people without sanctioning them pattas during their 10-year rule.

“They are now shedding crocodile tears,” he said, adding that the Praja Prabhutvam (Congress government) sanctioned house site pattas and Indiramma houses to the eligible poor people as part of its commitment to provide a roof over the head of every poor person.

Later, the beneficiaries interacted with the Ministers and thanked them for taking initiative to provide them house site pattas and Indiramma houses in Velugumatla.

Khammam Collector Anudeep Durishetty, Police Commissioner Sunil Dutt and others were present.
