The jurisdiction of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), which had been the Hyderabad metropolitan area of about 1,458 sq km and 14 lakh consumer connections, has been extended along with the territorial reorganisation of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Wednesday.

As per this organisational restructuring, the new limits being up to the Core Urban Region (CURE), the Board is now divided into three independent regional units or zones of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri.

For improving administrative capacity, ease of functioning and efficient delivery of services, each zone will now be headed by an executive director.

The existing incumbent executive director to assist the managing director of the board in day-to-day administration, stands posted as the joint managing director.

Accordingly, the new appointments are: joint managing director Mayank Mittal, executive director (Malkajgiri) S.Pankaja, executive director (Cyberabad) M.Santhosh and executive director (Hyderabad or Central) Samrat Ashok Nama. The four newly appointed senior officials took charge in their respective zones on Wednesday.

The HMWS&SB, after it was formed in 1989, served the then Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad limits of about 168 sq km and 2.50 lakh connections. With rapid urbanisation and expansion of the city, the jurisdiction spanned up to 1,458 sq km and covered about 14 lakh connections.

As per the reorganisation now, HMWS&SB is mandated and will provide water supply and sewerage services, will monitor, maintain and develop water supply and sewerage network and connected infrastructure in the CURE of 2053 sq km, besides construction of new sewage treatment plants to serve the entire region.
