The Higher Education department has sanctioned 59 new courses in government and aided arts and science colleges in the University of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi University, University of Calicut (CU), and Kannur University from the 2026-27 academic year. Thirty-five aided colleges and seven government colleges have been included in the list. An order for the purpose was issued on March 14. Forty seven of the new courses are in aided colleges, and the rest are in government colleges. According to the order, the permission is subject to the approval from the respective universities and on the condition that no new posts will be created in the next five years. Colleges where only one course has been sanctioned can launch one more, subject to the above conditions. Similarly, colleges where no new course has been sanctioned can begin two new ones. The universities had earlier given proposals to start new academic programmes. The newly approved courses include B.Sc. (Data Science), B.Sc. (Computer Science-Honours and Research), B.A. (Public Administration-Honours), M.Sc. (Physics with specialisation in Nano Science), and Integrated M.Sc.(Geography), M.Com. (Logistics and Supply Chain Management), M.Sc. (Botany –Ethano Botany and Ethano Pharmacology), B.Sc. (Artificial Intelligence and Data Science), B.B.A. (International Relations and Public Policy), B.A. (Econometrics and Data Management-Honours), M.Sc. (Home Science-Nutrition and Dietetics), B.Sc. (Forensic Science and Criminology). Five government colleges in the University of Kerala got four new undergraduate (UG) and four postgraduate (PG) courses each. Two government colleges in Kannur University got two UG courses and two PG courses each. Aided colleges Sixteen aided colleges in the University of Kerala got 21 new courses, including eight PG courses. In Mahatma Gandhi University, three colleges got five UG courses. Thirteen colleges in the University of Calicut got 15 courses, including five PG courses. In Kannur University, four colleges got six courses, including one PG course.
