LPG shortage crisis: Karnataka Assembly witnesses uproar as Congress, BJP trade barbs The Karnataka Legislative Assembly witnessed an uproar on March 11, 2026, over the crisis in commercial LPG cylinders, with the ruling Congress blaming the Centre’s policies while the Opposition BJP accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of supporting hoteliers’ decision to shut down operations. An irked Mr. Siddaramaiah criticised the Centre for increasing cylinder prices and invoking provisions under the Essential Commodities Act (ESMA). During Zero Hour, H.D. Ranganath (Kunigal) of the Congress drew attention to the LPG issue and claimed that a domestic cylinder which earlier cost ₹900 is now priced at ₹1,800. He also alleged that a commercial cylinder that used to cost ₹2,000 is now being sold for ₹4,000, and blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “weak foreign policy”, triggering protests from BJP members. BJP members objected to the Congress “politicising” the LPG crisis, which they said had been caused by external factors. 2. Periodic revision of guidance value essential for fair land compensation: Krishna Byre Gowda Periodic revision of land guidance value is necessary to ensure that farmers receive fair compensation during land acquisition and to prevent distortions in land transactions, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda told the Karnataka Legislative Council. The Minister said regular revision of guidance value would help bridge the gap between official rates and prevailing market prices, while also reducing the scope for unaccounted cash transactions in land deals. “In some areas, the guidance value of land may be around ₹2 lakh while the actual market value ranges between ₹70 lakh and ₹80 lakh. Such a large difference encourages transactions involving unaccounted money.” Periodic revision of guidance value, he said, would help align official values with market realities, curb black money in property transactions, and ensure that farmers receive fair and reasonable compensation when their land is acquired for public projects. 3. RERA tribunal upholds description of BDA as a ‘promoter’, crucial win for allottees of sites in Bengaluru The Karnataka Real Estate Appellate Tribunal (KREAT) has dismissed an appeal filed by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) challenging an order of the Karnataka Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) directing the board to register the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout (NPKL) project under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016. The tribunal rejected the appeal at the stage of admission and confirmed the order passed by the RERA Authority on November 7, 2025. The order by the tribunal makes it mandatory for the BDA to follow RERA rules, which it had been attempting to avoid by contending that it is a statutory authority regulated by its own Act and rules. The order is considered crucial for the allottees of BDA sites because the authority had been maintaining that any dispute with the allottees has to be adjudicated in accordance with the BDA (Allotment of Site) Rules, enacted in 1984, and not RERA. 4. Opposition MLAs express concern over drone survey of properties in Bengaluru Opposition MLAs from Bengaluru expressed concern over the use of drones for the ongoing survey of properties by the five corporations under GBA to know if the actual built-up area matches what has been declared by the owners. While C.K. Ramamurthy expressed concern that such a measure had caused panic among residents, Leader of Opposition R. Ashok described it as ‘property tax terrorism’ and alleged that the tax was being indiscriminately raised after the drone survey.
