HDK warns against politics, fast-tracks ₹750-cr ARAI facility in Mandya

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H. D. Kumaraswamy urged officials and stakeholders to expedite the establishment of a prestigious Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) testing centre in Mandya, warning against delays caused by political differences.

Chairing a DISHA meeting in Mandya on Monday (April 6), Mr. Kumaraswamy said discussions are currently under way regarding the feasibility and constraints of the land identified by the State government. He emphasised that time should not be wasted and proposed that the foundation stone for the project be laid as early as May.

Calling the ARAI facility a “rare and highly significant” project, he noted that only a handful of such centres exist in the country. “It is a matter of pride that such a premier institution is being considered for Mandya,” he said, adding that several States are competing to host the facility.

The Minister cautioned that losing the project owing to political disagreements would be a major setback for the district. “This project is crucial not just for Mandya but for the State and the nation. Political differences must be set aside in the larger interest of development,” he stressed.

The Minister said he would write to State Industries Minister M.B. Patil to convene a meeting within a week, urging all stakeholders to act swiftly to ensure early commencement of the ARAI project. “Let us work together for Mandya’s future, ignoring political differences,” he said.

Mr. Kumaraswamy revealed that the proposal is expected to be placed before the Union Cabinet within a week. Initially allocated ₹500 crore, the project has now been scaled up, with the Centre ready to invest ₹750 crore immediately and potentially up to ₹1,000 crore in the future, he informed.

Highlighting its economic impact, he said the project could generate employment for at least 25,000 youth, while also creating indirect opportunities for lakhs and developing a strong automobile ecosystem in the region.

At present, 105 acres of land have been identified for the facility, with scope for additional allocation if required. Officials from the department have already inspected the site and held discussions with the district administration.

The Deputy Commissioner is currently preparing a technical report. “Once we receive the report, we will proceed with the next steps without delay,” the Minister assured.

Mr. Kumaraswamy also urged the media to support development initiatives and avoid negative reporting. He noted that farmers have sought clarity regarding land allocation.

Referring to the revival of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, he credited timely intervention and support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including a ₹11,400 crore special package, for turning around the loss-making unit. He also cited large-scale industrial developments in Andhra Pradesh, including green steel projects involving global players. Such efforts from the State can help attract industrial investments, he opined.
