The Haritha Keralam Mission has initiated steps to prepare comprehensive action plans on water conservation and water literacy under the leadership of local self-government institutions in Kannur district. The decision was taken at the Haritha Keralam Mission district meeting held here as part of preparations for the National Environmental Summit scheduled to be held in Thiruvananthapuram later this month. The meeting resolved to expand water quality testing by setting up laboratories in all higher secondary schools, extend Devaharitham green islands to temples and other places of worship, and promote farm tourism by forming a tourism consortium. The meeting also discussed a detailed future action document focusing on the sectors of water, sanitation and agriculture, outlining targets to be achieved by the district in the coming years. It noted that large districts face increasing challenges in resource management and service delivery, underscoring the need for coordinated initiatives at the local level. The district meeting, inaugurated by Kannur District Panchayat president Binoy Kurian recently, also presented an award to the organisers of the Perumkaliyattam festival at the Muchilot Bhagavathi Temple in Cherukunnu for successfully implementing eco-friendly protocols during the event. Officials of the Irrigation department’s Pazhassi Division were honoured for restoring water flow through the Pazhassi project canal after several years, a move that contributed to improved soil moisture and mitigation of drinking water scarcity in the district. District Collector Arun K. Vijayan distributed awards to the officials and prizes to students who won quiz and essay competitions.
