The majestic bullocks, which play a crucial role in ploughing fields and preparing land for sowing, drew significant public attention. Indigenous and recognised breeds such as Hallikar, Malnad Gidda, Ongole, Amrit Mahal and Kilari impressed spectators with their stature, strength and grace. A panel of veterinary experts led by Kotresh Basavaraj, professor at the Veterinary College, Bidar, along with veterinarians from various districts, evaluated the animals based on breed purity, physical build, agility, gait, shiny coat, eye health, age, dental condition and the care provided by farmers. The winners will be announced after detailed assessment. Assistant Director Basavaraj Benni (retd.) interacted with farmers during the event, offering insights into the breeds and their role in sustainable agriculture. The celebrations extended beyond the livestock exhibition, with the Matanga Hill grounds emerging as a hub of artistic and agricultural displays. A fruit and flower show captivated visitors with elaborate floral recreations of iconic Hampi monuments, including the towering Badavi Shivalinga and the Sasivekalu Ganesha, crafted using thousands of chrysanthemum, rose and marigold blossoms. Floral portraits of Emperor Krishnadevaraya and installations recalling the golden era of the Vijayanagara Empire added visual splendour, while exhibits on bonsai art, horticulture crops and environmental themes enriched the showcase. The ‘Suggi Sambhrama’ (harvest celebration) and agricultural exhibition further highlighted the region’s agrarian heritage. Traditional Sankranti rituals, seed preservation practices, folk performances, bullock cart displays and demonstrations of both conventional and modern farming techniques reflected the seamless blend of heritage and innovation. Indigenous seed varieties, millets, organic produce, sericulture initiatives, integrated farming models and the use of drones in agriculture were among the key attractions that drew farmers and visitors alike. Adding a social dimension to the festivities, a rangoli competition held in front of the Virupaksha Temple showcased both artistic excellence and public awareness. As many as 41 women participants created intricate designs depicting themes ranging from the emblem of the Vijayanagara Empire to portraits of historical figures and religious motifs. Notably, several artworks carried the message “Save the Girl Child”, lending a meaningful social message to the colourful celebrations. With a rich mix of culture, agriculture and community participation, the opening day of Hampi Utsav-2026 set the tone for three days of grand festivities at the historic site.
