Meti has announced that she will fight the Bagalkot bypolls as an Independent candidate. Election Commission of India has now announced the byelections to the seat in view of the death of H.Y. Meti a few months ago. Voting is scheduled for April 9. Three children of the former MLA, Mahadevi Meti, Mallikarjun Meti and Umesh Meti, have declared that they are aspirants for the seat. The internal dispute in the family was well publicised and discussed at various levels. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced in Bagalkot recently that party ticket will go to a member of the Meti family. Mahadevi Meti issued a release in Bagalkot on Monday that she will file her nomination papers in Bagalkot on March 20, as an Independent candidate. This follows reports that the Congress may choose Mallikarjun Meti as its nominee. Her followers released posters on social media on Monday, saying that her father’s popularity will help her win the seat.
