Ariyalur district’s visually impaired para-athlete K. Sivagami has been appointed as a para-athletics visiting coach, with the appointment order presented by Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in Tiruchi on Friday.

Ms. Sivagami, a resident of Jayankondam in Ariyalur district, lost her parents at a young age. She and her five sisters are all visually impaired from birth. Despite the severe socio-economic challenges faced by the family, Ms. Sivagami pursued sports with determination and carved a place for herself in para-athletics.

Competing in shot put and discus throw events, she has secured victories at various competitions and won medals at the national-level para-athletics meets. She has also represented India in Asian and international para-athletics competitions, bringing recognition to the State and the country.

Four days ago, Ms. Sivagami met the Deputy Chief Minister at the Secretariat in Chennai, carrying the medals and certificates won by her. During the meeting, she explained her family circumstances and requested employment assistance. Acting on the directions of the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister instructed officials to initiate steps for providing her employment through Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.
