A flying squad team seized about 46 kg of gold jewellery, worth approximately ₹65 crore, belonging to a reputed jewellery store near Redhills. The consignment has been handed over to Income Tax Department officials for further investigation, said sources.

With the announcement of election dates in Tamil Nadu and the Model Code of Conduct in force, flying squad teams have intensified surveillance to curb cash movement and distribution of gifts. As part of this, officials were conducting strict vehicle checks near the Nallur toll plaza in Redhills, under the Madhavaram Assembly constituency.

During the inspection, a vehicle travelling from Chennai to Ponneri was intercepted. Upon checking, officials were shocked to find a large quantity of gold jewellery inside. Subsequent inquiries revealed that the jewellery, belonging to the GRT jewellery chain in Chennai, was being transported to a workshop for melting and remaking into new ornaments.

Following this, the flying squad seized the gold and took it to the office of the Madhavaram Returning Officer. In the presence of Returning Officer Perumal, employees of the jewellery firm submitted relevant documents.

However, considering the high value and volume of the consignment, officials informed the Income Tax Department. The seized jewellery has since been handed over to Income Tax authorities to verify whether all items are properly accounted for. Officials stated that further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
