The three-day international seminar on fireflies, jointly organised by the Department of Zoology, Kannur University Mananthavady campus, the Firefly Asian Association (FAA), and Christ College, Irinjalakuda, concluded on Thursday (February 6, 2026).

The seminar featured in-depth scientific discussions and paper presentations on firefly diversity, ecology, conservation, and emerging research approaches.

Delegates from 10 countries and nine States made research presentations, underscoring the global relevance of firefly research.

The seminar provided a platform for international knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the strengthening of conservation-oriented research networks.

The valedictory session was inaugurated by Dr. V.P. Unniyal, who highlighted that meaningful societal progress could be achieved only through effective exchange of scientific knowledge. The session was chaired by Dr. K.N. Ajoy Kumar, Head of the Department of Botany, Kannur University campus.

A firefly identification centre for academic research will be established at Kannur University.
