The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has cleared 1,458 metric tonnes of solid waste and 547 MT of construction debris from across the city, during the ongoing sanitation drive.

The special sanitation drive which has reached the sixth day on Saturday, had commenced with the cleaning of foot overbridges on the first day. Later, it was extended to flyovers, roadsides, dividers, central medians, kerb stones, lakes, drains, footpaths, parks, and later to include the construction and demolition waste.

Across the GHMC limits covering 300 wards, special sanitation works were undertaken at 1,204 identified areas and points, including foot overbridges, flyovers, garbage vulnerable points and parks, a statement informed. As part of the drive, GHMC staff with the help of traffic police removed old cars kept at roadside for a long time, making it easy for traffic.

Commissioner R.V. Karnan has directed zonal and deputy Commissioners to further intensify their focus on sanitation and take proactive measures to improve cleanliness across Greater Hyderabad.

Through a video conference on Saturday, the Commissioner reviewed the progress of the drive and other developmental programmes with Additional Commissioners, Zonal Commissioners, senior engineering officials and heads of various departments. He emphasised the need to create widespread public awareness on the importance of sanitation and cleanliness, and called for active people’s participation for transformation of Hyderabad.
