The State Highways Department has started installing AI-enabled cameras with screens on the GD Naidu flyover in Coimbatore city at ₹3 crore.

The flyover will have 44 cameras and 16 screens to capture more than 10 types of traffic violations.

An official of the Department said the cameras are programmed to identify speeding, beltless or helmetless travel, bright lights, wrong side driving, etc. These will be displayed on the screens (six feet by three feet) with the vehicle number. A control room on the main Avinashi road will have panels that will be remotely connected to the Police and Transport departments.

The violations and the photos will get uploaded on the Vaahan portal, the official said.

The plan is to instal all the cameras by the end of this month.

District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar had suggested installation of cameras on the flyover to control violations and the project was developed based on that, the official said.

The Department is also looking at settling the legal issue related to one of the ramps of the flyover so that the ramp work can be completed at the earliest, the official added.

Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the 10.1 km flyover in October last year and it has a total of eight ramps.
