Forest Department officials have mounted a vigil in view of the sudden movement of five gaurs which strayed into Pudukottai district from the bordering Tiruchi district. The large bovines are believed to have entered into the district from the neighbouring Manapparai forest range in Tiruchi district. The Manapparai and Thuvarankurichi forest ranges in Tiruchi district bordering Pudukottai district have significant presence of gaurs which keep moving, especially at night. The movement of the five gaurs were at first spotted at Vettukadu village near Ilupur in Pudukottai district on Thursday night by the local people who alerted the field-level officials of the Forest Department. Subsequently, the gaurs moved to Karuppadipatti village near Kolathur in the district. The wild animals stayed there in a huge busy area without being disturbed. The animals could have strayed in search of either water or food into Pudukottai district which did not have presence of gaurs, the official said. Vigil is being maintained in view of the movement of the strayed gaurs, the official said and added that information about the movement of bovines in Pudukottai district had been conveyed to the department officials in neighbouring Manapparai range. An alert had been sounded to the locals.
