Come elections, the police are put on their toes. However, the presence of 60 vehicles — three flying squad teams and three static surveillance teams in each of the 10 constituencies at any point of time across Madurai district — has improved the visibility of police on the roads.

Besides, the presence of Central Paramilitary Force with arms adds to the police visibility.

These 60 vehicles making vehicle checks multiply the already existing vehicle checks done at all the police check posts on the Madurai district police and the city police border and on the district borders, said a senior police officer.

“Thus, the police are present at different places and on different, but important roads 24×7,” he added.

Over and above the police patrolling and vehicle checks, the CAPF and the police are also simultaneously taking up area dominance at different parts of the city/district by way of flag march.

Armed police on the roads and videographying vehicle movement would give a moral fear among the trouble mongers.

Not many bad elements would like to take a chance to roam around with a criminal intention. Videographing done by the poll surveillance teams would force the vehicles of the criminals to leave a digital footprint through which they could fall in the police net later.

Besides, the police have also intensified security proceedings against those with criminal antecedents.

“We are in the process of binding over the history-sheeters and criminal elements to ensure no trouble from their part during the next few months,” the officer said.

Simultaneously, the police are also taking stringent action against drug peddling and illegal sale of liquor.

“Above all, the bad elements know that no influential person would come to the police with recommendation in their favour. Usually, the crime rate goes down during election time because of the elaborate security arrangements,” the officer quipped.
