The bureau has recorded a rise in frauds involving fake Sankranti offers, discounts and cashback links circulated through WhatsApp, SMS and social media platforms. Officials have also observed an increase in fraudulent bus, train, flight and cruise booking websites, along with scam messages claiming Sankranti gifts, prize money or lucky draws. Bogus online shopping links advertising festival deals at unusually low prices and fake instant loan or easy credit offers have also been reported. Officials noted that many of these fraudulent links are shared through trusted contacts and family groups, making them appear genuine and significantly increasing the risk of victimisation during the festive season. The bureau urged citizens to avoid clicking on unknown festive links or offers received through messaging apps or social media. Victims of cyber fraud have been urged to report incidents immediately by calling the national cyber fraud helpline 1930 or by registering a complaint on the cybercrime reporting portal. The bureau said early reporting during the ‘golden hour’ improves the chances of preventing financial loss and enables swift police action.
