Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, accompanied by Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ketan Garg Rao, on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for a Working Women’s Hostel near Shivashakti Nagar in Buttavanipalem Layout at Madhurawada here. The project is being taken up by the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2024-25, with an estimated outlay of ₹26.12 crore. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said Visakhapatnam had witnessed rapid industrial growth, leading to a steady rise in the number of working women. The hostel is being constructed to ensure their safety and convenience. He said Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had supported the sanction of three Working Women’s Hostels for Visakhapatnam in the Union Budget, and that ₹172 crore had been released by the Central and State governments for the construction of three such hostels in the city. With the number of working women increasing day by day, the government has initiated the construction of three hostels. Foundation stones have already been laid for hostels at Gajuwaka and Mudasarlova, while the Madhurawada hostel is now being taken up. The MLA said the G plus 4 structure would have 96 rooms to accommodate 248 women and would be equipped with modern amenities. He added that the hostel would be made available to working women at the earliest, with special emphasis on safety and security. He said GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg Rao and Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat had played a key role in securing approvals for the hostels. The facility will include parking, garden, kitchen, indoor games, rooftop cafe, yoga and gym facilities, library, medical room, warden room, toilets and other infrastructure.
