Chief Minister M.K Stalin laid the foundation stone for the construction of a flyover connecting Sardar Patel Road in Guindy and Guru Nanak College junction in Velachery, through video conference from the Secretariat here on Thursday.

This project was announced during the Tamil Nadu Budget session in 2025.

According to a press release, the project is being implemented by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) under the Infrastructure and Amenities Fund, at an estimated cost of ₹310 crore.

The two-lane flyover will be three-km-long and 11.9-m-wide.

The project includes approach roads at Five Furlong Road and Velachery Main Road.

The flyover will span from the Sardar Patel Road-Velachery Main Road junction to Guru Nanak College, via the Race Course Road junction, the Five Furlong Road junction, and the Velachery Bypass Road junction, the release said.

A 5.5-m-wide approach bridge will be constructed at Five Furlong Road, while another, measuring four metres in width, will be built near the Guru Nanak College.

Service roads

Service roads measuring 5.5 metres in width, and footpaths measuring 1.5 metres in width will be built on both sides of the flyover.

Once completed, the project is expected to benefit more than two lakh residents in Velachery, Guindy, and the surrounding areas by easing traffic congestion at the Velachery Main Road junction and Five Furlong Road junction, the release added.
